Bushfire (V1.10)

A Game by Aaron & Adam Fothergill

Experimental Pine Forest number 13 is the last remaining forest of Goose Spruce trees left in the world. These rare fir trees, perfect for building giant aircraft, have been in steady decline for the last four decades and the EPF13 was established to preserve those remaining and attempt to prevent their extinction.

In order to protect the forest, and the holidaymakers who are allowed in the forest, a helicopter based fire service was formed, with a specially modified fire fighting helicopter (with spare parts to build several more) and a team of smoke jumpers who can be parachuted into the forest to help control any fires that break out.

Unfortunately, Goose Spruces are very flamamble, and little things like dropped cigarettes and lightning strikes can start serious forest fires, so the fire fighting team is kept busy. Rumours have been surfacing that somebody is trying to destroy the forest, so keep alert.

Your Mission: Put out any forest fires, and don’t let any civilians get hurt!

Note: Watch out for bonuses (including some that will give you some extra features :) Watch the extras folder ;)

Controls:Control the chopper with the arrow keys, press space to drop water and press Z to drop a smoke jumper.

Smoke Jumpers won't jump out if the helicopter is too low, and the Z key can be used to call in your smoke jumpers when you are at tree height or below.

As of v1.10 you can now save and load your game.

OS-X Users

Bushfire is Carbonised and has been tested under OS X. All seems to work well. As of V1.10 we've even got it to change the screen mode on startup. This however, requires OSX 10.0.2. If you are using OS X, please make sure you've updated to 10.0.2 as it fixes a LOT of problems related to games.

The new ability to automatically switch to the right screen mode is brought to you with the help of RezLib by Ian Ollmann Ph.D. RezLib, is Copyright © 2000 by the author, Ian R. Ollmann, Ph.D. All rights reserved.

New for V1.06. WIDESCREEN MODE !

Bushfire will normally try and set the correct screen mode for play (640x480xthousands of colours)...

If you hold down the Shift key just after the application launches however, Bushfire will use the current screen size and use the full width of the screen. So if you start up the game on a 1024x768 screen. Bushfire will run at 1024 x 480. Obviously, this mode is a little slower, so only use it if your machine/graphics card can cope!

New for V1.07

How fast can you complete the levels ?

Bushfire now records your fastest times for each level and writes out a html file in the Extras folder. If you think your times are good, drop the best_times.html file onto your website and link to it so we can all see how good you are at Busfhire !

OS 8.6/9.x users:

You will need an up to date version of CarbonLib to run Bushfire. Other than that, everything should be fine.

Any comments, bug reports, ideas for future versions (if we get enough Strangeware fees that is), email me at

New Game!!!

Coming soon, our new game... Airburst!

Strangeware

Strangeware is Strange Flavour’s new method of game distribution and registration. It’s meant to be a nice simple way for you, the user, to get fun games and software, and for us, the authors, to get rewarded for putting the effort in to write and support it.

Basically, Strangeware is a form of shareware. You download the game, enjoy playing it, and send us a registration fee. Unlike other forms of shareware however, Strangeware isn’t crippled until you register in any way. The games are fully playable, include all their levels and features, and don’t pop up annoying alerts to remind you to register (although the game’s characters might hint at it from time to time ;).

We also don’t want you worrying about using credit cards over the internet, chasing around trying to find a bank that can write you a cheque in a foreign currency, or waiting for your registration. So we’ve made that side of it simple.

To register your Strangeware game, just send either £2 (2 pounds UK sterling), or $3 (3 US Dollars) in cash (you remember, that stuff you used to use to pay the milkman) to the following address:

Aaron Fothergill,

30 Heronsgate,

Edgeware,

Middlesex

HA8 7LD

United Kingdom

Simply tape 2 pound coins (or 1 £2 coin) to a piece of card, stuff it in an envelope and post it to us. For US$, put 3 $1 bills wrapped in a piece of paper (no $3 bills please!) in an envelope and post it to us. We don’t need your name and address, or anything worrying like that (the game is already fully featured, so we don’t need to send you anything).

Hopefully, this system means that you don’t have to part with much money or any personal information, and we should be able to afford to write more games for the Mac (we’re planning a few before the end of the year).

We’re quite prepared to accept that not everyone will register the games, but hopefully, enough will do so to make it worth our writing them.

Strangeware F.A.Q

Q) How much does it cost to register a Strangeware title ?

A) £2, or $3, whichever is easiest for you. If you absolutely can’t get GB£ or US$ (despite what the US and British governments might think, there are other countries out there :) then please send the equivalent in local currency.

Q) Do I have to register ?

A) If you like playing Bushfire you should send in your Strangeware fee. Because if no-one bothers registering, we won’t be able to afford to write more games, and it will make us sad. Come on, have a look down the back of the sofa!

Q) Do I have to give you my address or anything ?

A) No, we don’t need to send you anything (the game is all there), so we don’t need names, addresses or anything scary like that.

Q) Do you accept cheques, money orders, food stamps ?

A) Sorry, cash only (Saves us paying to clear them, and you paying to use them).
